“We create a product that’s made to be interpreted by your mind and you create a solution with it.”

Barak Zitron, Co-founder and CEO, MODL

Customers Design the How-To-Use

  • I've always loved seeing outdoor gear companies that seem to come out of nowhere with one simple product and take off – and that’s MODL. I’m a bit embarrassed that I learned about MODL via Facebook ads, but whatever. I investigated and saw that MODL is a Colorado company, so I wanted to meet Barak Zitron, co-founder and CEO. The company started with an idea to secure a water bottle from swinging on a backpack — and turned into the Infinity Tool, a strap system now sold in REI stores across the country. What stood out to me most was the design philosophy behind it. Barak doesn't try to anticipate every way people will use the product — he builds something simple enough that customers invent their own solutions with it, from securing a snowboard binding mid-mountain to mounting gear inside an aerobatic plane. We also got into how a three-person founding team keeps R&D costs low, how they landed REI after two tries, and why their growth has run about 2.5x a year for three straight years. It's a look at how a product built to be "finished" by the customer became one of the fastest-growing outdoor product brands.
